Hypurin Porcine R/Neutral as sold in Canada. This insulin is called Hypurin Porcine Neutral elsewhere.
Hypurin Porcine Neutral or Hypurin Pork Regular (Canadian brand name) is a pork-based short-acting insulin made by CP Pharma. [3]
Eli Lilly's Iletin II R [4] was comparable; Novo Nordisk's Pork Actrapid [5][6][7][8] was discontinued at the end of December 2007. [9]
Other comparable insulins in current production are Betasint Porcine Corriente and Maxirapid CHO.
As with all R/neutral insulins, regardless of species, nothing has been added to alter the speed or action of the insulin. [10][11]
Health Canada has approved this insulin, along with another pork product, Hypurin Porcine Isophane, known as Hypurin Pork Isophane or Hypurin Pork NPH in Canada. Both are currently available on the Canadian market without importation. [12] See wiki's CP Pharma page for more information regarding their Canadian availability.
A short-acting, soluble, non-suspended insulin produced from r-DNA/GE/GM, bovine, or porcine sources. From 1921 to the 1930's when PZI was developed, R was the only kind of insulin available.
While both R/neutral and semilente insulins are considered fast-acting, they differ in a few ways. As above, there's no suspension or buffer [13] in R/neutral; it's totally dissolved and soluble, meaning it can safely be used intravenously. [14]
The very small insulin particles in semilente insulin are suspended by zinc. [13] Semilente is cloudy, has an acetate buffer and cannot be used intravenously.
R/Neutral insulin cannot be reliably mixed with Lente or Ultralente insulins. [15][16] Semilente can; the ratio of 3 parts semilente insulin to 7 parts ultralente insulin produces Lente insulin. [13]
